Sunlight Refresher

Ahh, sunshine. There’s just something about those longer spring days and brighter skies that feels like a reset button for the soul.

I’ve always known that natural light gives me a boost, but I never really understood why... until recently.
While listening to The Maximized Minimalist podcast, I heard Dr. John La Puma talk about the powerful benefits of spending time outdoors. His latest book, Indoor Epidemic: 93% Inside Steals Sleep, Focus & Years—The 7% Outdoor Rx Restores Them, dives into the science behind how being inside so much affects our sleep, focus, and overall health.
Honestly, it was fascinating. And a little eye-opening.

I’ve always enjoyed being outside…as long as it’s warm. But after hearing this, I’m rethinking that stance. Apparently, the benefits of natural light don’t take a season off, so maybe it’s time to bundle up and step outside...even on those chillier days.
I love sharing little nuggets of information like this, especially when they’re easy to put into practice. A few of my coworkers and I have gotten into the habit of taking short walks during the day when we can. It started as a simple break, but we quickly realized it helps shake off that afternoon slump.

One of the most interesting things Dr. La Puma mentioned is that “the minimum effective dose is just 17 minutes a day.” Seventeen minutes! When I heard that, I couldn’t wait to tell my coworkers, because our walks usually last right around 18 or 19 minutes. Talk about perfect timing. No wonder we come back feeling refreshed.
It’s not complicated. It’s not expensive. It’s just simple science—and a good reminder that sometimes the smallest habits can make the biggest difference.
So here’s your gentle nudge: step outside today. Leave your phone behind, take off the sunglasses, and soak in the natural light for a few minutes. Notice the air, the sounds, the warmth (or even the chill).
Your body...and your mind...will thank you.
